Both gutters and downspouts can also be clogged over time with leaf debris and by plants and animal activity.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11048\" src=\"https:\/\/www.earthworksjax.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/inspect-gutters.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&#8211;<strong>Extend your downspouts away from structures.<\/strong> Whereas downspouts typically release water close to the foundation of buildings extending the downspout farther away reduces the risk of erosion and standing water close to those structures. This can be accomplished with a variety of materials not only actual downspouts but hard plastic and vinyl downspout diverters.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&#8211;<strong>Keep drainage routes clear.<\/strong> The drainage route consists of the entire distance from where the water is released from the downspout to the catchbasin which may be a local waterway tributary. &#8220;Keeping debris out of storm drains and ditches,&#8221; according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.palmcoastobserver.com\/article\/water-management-district-as-dorian-approaches-check-gutters-and-storm-drains\">Palm Coast Observer.<\/a> &#8220;Reporting clogged ditches to local governments.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11049\" src=\"https:\/\/www.earthworksjax.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/clogged_stormdrain.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>\r\n<figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/www.palmcoastobserver.com\/article\/water-management-district-as-dorian-approaches-check-gutters-and-storm-drains\">Clogged storm drains contribute to flooding<\/a><\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&#8211;<strong>Improve grading when required.<\/strong> Often times properties require elevation and slope adjustments as a result of structures being built in poorly draining areas and as a result of earth moving by the property owner and erosion. &#8220;Everyone lives in an area with some flood risk\u2014it\u2019s just a question of whether you live in a high-risk, low-risk, or moderate-risk flood area,&#8221; according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floodsmart.gov\/understanding-my-flood-zone\">Federal Emergency Management Agency<\/a>. Find your property&#8217;s flood risk at the <a href=\"https:\/\/msc.fema.gov\/portal\/home\">FEMA Flood Ma<\/a>p Service Center. Grant the French Drain was first described in his 1859 publication <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/files\/23435\/23435-h\/23435-h.htm#CHAPTER_II\">Farm Drainage<\/a>. &#8220;The 1859 book is the drainage world\u2019s \u201cPrincipia Mathematica,\u201d its \u201cOn the Origin of Species,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/ever-wonder-why-its-a-french-drain-its-got-nothing-to-do-with-france\/2015\/07\/15\/5b7f326c-2b15-11e5-bd33-395c05608059_story.html\">Washington Post<\/a>. &#8220;Henry described various drainage techniques \u2014 the Deanston System, the Keythorpe System, the Wharncliffe System. He calculated the discharge volume of pipes of various diameters. He weighed the pros and cons of different pipe styles. And he recommended something that has helped many of us who live in constant fear of rain: an excavated trench filled with gravel in which rests a perforated pipe to carry away surface and groundwater. He called it a cellar drain. We know it as the French drain.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&#8211;<strong>Install and maintain properly functioning channel drains around pools and outdoor kitchen areas. <\/strong>Channel drains are typically installed at a lower elevation between homes and swimming pools to collect and distribute water away from those areas.
